Movie + Discussion: Upcycling Culture @ FashionClash Festival

  • The Social Hub 9A Sphinxcour Maastricht Netherlands (map)

Let’s talk trash! (literally)

Join the screening of the short documentary “Kantamanto: Upcycling Culture” produced by Hidden Cultures and Kantamanto Social Club on waste colonialism and creative upcycling.

The film celebrates the vibrant energy and resilience that define life in Kantamanto Market. Through the voices of traders, tailors, and upcyclers, we are invited into a community that has transformed the challenges of the global secondhand clothing trade into opportunities for innovation and connection.

The screening will be followed by a panel discussion with the co-director of the documentary Daan Sonnemans (Remade In, Kantamanto Social Club) in conversation with Jayden van der Meulen (RD4) to learn how our discarded clothing is handled in Limburg, and reimagine new pathways through the creativity of talented upcyclers such as emerging fashion designer Berber Struiksma (Patchwork Family collective).

The talk will be moderated by fashion activist Tena Lavrenčic (Thinking Threads) and has been organized by researcher and creative Cristina Palacios (KINKLEID) with the support of Gemeente Maastricht, Maastricht University and the FASHIONCLASH team.
